about

At some point or another I decided to record an album of music, doing as much of it on my own as I could. This is the result of that decision. All of the music and all of the lyrics I wrote alone in my bedroom. All of the guitar, bass, drums, and keys I played and recorded alone at my childhood home in Livermore, California.

Meredith Snyder, of the band Zilla, lent her voice to nine of these ten songs. I have her to thank for them being as good as they are. We recorded all of these vocal parts at her apartment in Boston with a microphone draped over a coat rack, dangling amongst an assortment of highly fashionable clothing. I expected the resulting sound to be unimpressive, but I no longer believe that any lack of gear could ever keep Meredith's voice from sounding great. She is incredibly talented and wonderfully easy to work with. I will always be grateful for her contribution.

Daniel Gensel, a former band mate of mine from the days of our hip-hop group, Multiple Organisms, completed all of the mixing and mastering at Whiskey Dick Studios in Fremont, California. He not only succeeded in camouflaging my shortcomings as a producer, he is to be credited entirely with pulling this project back from the brink after its numerous brushes with death. Thank you.

My best friend, Justin Remy, with whom I’ve been playing music for a decade, lent his voice to track number seven: “Worse”. His presence gives the song a perfectly different vibe. Thanks, dude.

Another former band mate, Laura Neusel, provided crucial back-up vocals for the first two tracks of the album: “Conversations Underground” and “Falling Leaf”. Her voice was a missing puzzle piece of sorts, and for that I thank her.

My wonderful sister, Jamie Dole Schuster, is responsible for this album's cover art. Thank you, not only for the album art, but for having such positive influence on me since day I was born.
The featured photograph is of me, grumpy as hell, on a long drive to Victoria, British Columbia, as a wee lad.

Special thanks to Deshawn Alexander, Andrew Ellington, Jeremy Gertz, Collin Leeds, Chance Hargrove, and Sara Montero for letting me couch surf in Boston throughout September of 2013 while I recorded vocals with Meredith.

Making this album would have never been possible without the support of my parents, John Schuster and Lisa Wallerstein, and my grandparents, Perry and Jennifer Wallerstein. I love you all.

Time to play music with other human beings again.

about

Stanwood Berkeley, California

"Stanwood" is my middle name.

I started playing guitar in 7th grade after buying a Led Zeppelin DVD box set to impress a girl I liked. At band practices, whenever there was down time, I would hop over to the drumset and attempt to drum. This led to me playing drums. Eventually the same thing happened with the bass guitar, and now I sort of specialize in being a one-man rhythm section of sorts. ... more

Track Name: Conversations Underground
I can tell that he’s an outsider from out of town.
From a cave in British Columbia
Not used to the sun.
He wears clothes that scream he’s alone
But not against his will

I used to think the world was round
Before I knew it pound for pound
Now I can hear the multitude of sounds
From conversations underground.

So long to you’re way of living underneath a rock.
That will no longer do it. You need to join the flock.
Or so I thought until he spoke and taught me all I know.

I used to think the world was round
Before I knew it pound for pound
Now I can hear the multitude of sounds
From conversations underground.

And if he doesn’t want to stay,
He might as well go back to caves.
He hasn’t seen the sun in seven days.
He doesn’t want to anyway.
Track Name: Falling Leaf
Family of green. Home of grey.
Set to leave home someday.
Falling so the sun can see me.
Falling but finally free.

Falling Leaf, you should fall far away.
Let the sun see you sitting in its’ rays.
Falling leaf I don’t know what to say.
Maybe one day we’ll have some words relay.

A mighty oak. A cowardly leaf.
One in the same, both seek relief.
I’ve taken, you gave.
But now I long for my grave.
I leave you for the ground.
To hear some other sound.

Falling Leaf, you should fall far away.
Let the sun see you sitting in its’ rays.
Falling leaf I don’t know what to say.
Maybe one day we’ll have some words relay.

Please, let me go there.
Let me be the one who finally knows where
I can’t just sit and stare.
This moment is more rare than gold out of thin air.
Track Name: Rabbit's Paw
Please forget what you saw.
It was a just a rabbit’s paw.
It might’ve just saved us all.
So reckless; if it weren’t a necklace we might’ve been breakfast for the senseless.
They’re coming to take us away.

Superstitious.
The rabbit’s paw will save us all.
Anxious. Paranoid.
The rabbit’s paw will save us all.

Don’t throw stones in a mirrored room.
If you break one, 7 years doomed.
How would you like to consume the wives’ tales, the black cats, the white whales?
Without its rails the train would fail.
Without ‘em I grow so pale.

Superstitious.
The rabbit’s paw will save us all.
Anxious. Paranoid.
The rabbit’s paw will save us all.
The thing about it…I think about it all the time.
What about it? It’s too horrible to hide.
Track Name: Tell Me What I Need To Be
Go on your own for a little while.
Take a look around before you leave.
The décor is not bad, it just needs work.
I bet you’d fix it with a smirk.

It’s all just right. You can’t pretend to see.
It’s fine my dear. You’ve just got to see.

Tell me what I need to be.
Yours is the one thing that I see.
This arrangement has but one side.
If it had two, we’d both be blind.

Now that you’ve seen it all in your head, for you to come back down would mean the end.
Something inside insists that I follow you around the corner through the bend.

It’s all just right. You can’t pretend to see.
It’s fine my dear. You’ve just gotta see.

Tell me what I need to be.
Yours is the one thing that I see.
This arrangement has but one side.
If it had two, we’d both be blind.
I tried to lose, but not in time.
Track Name: Mining For Words
This man is mining for words.
He longs for those things that he’s heard.
He looks through his thoughts
He sees rivers and rocks
And they all just keep turning to birds
And they all keep turning to birds

I just wanna go with you.
Take me away from these kinds of places.
Your wings are wide enough.
I can’t take a second more of these faces.

This man is breaking the surface
His mind is becoming a furnace
Written on papyrus. Reflect in the iris
Those things he saw gave him courage

I just wanna go with you.
Take me away from these kinds of places.
Your wings are wide enough.
I can’t take a second more of these faces.
Track Name: The Sun Is Dead
There goes a broken man.
He knows how stand the sun
If only he could float away
He could be the only one.
I just don’t see.
There’s no way to leave.

‘Cause I don’t have the patience to reprimand you for your reservations.
They’re yours to hold.

Even if he took the chance
Broke down all the walls.
Luck knows not a soul.
Futile after all.
I still don’t see.
Any possibility.

‘Cause I don’t have the patience to reprimand you for your reservations.
They’re yours to hold.

The only problem with being so limited.
Is wanting only to be outside of your head.
And when I tell you that I no longer see the sun.
It’s only human to worry. Don’t worry none.
The sun is dead.
The sun is dead and I’m still here instead.

But I never cared for the meaning of life at all or the papers.
It’s mine to hold.
Track Name: Worse
You sit alone on a couch in the middle of the street.
When I drive by you just smile and say “It’s been nice to meet”.

But sadly, as it were, I’m alone just like her.
It’s getting much worse.

Then I return with a truck and offer to pick you up.
You just refuse and decide to just to stay down on your luck.

But sadly, as it were, I’m alone just like her.
It’s getting much worse.
The car I drive might as well be a hearse.
So long to you. Good luck with the curse.
It all could be worse.

It’s getting much worse.
The car I drive might as well be a hearse.
So long to you. Good luck with the curse.
It all could be worse.
It’s getting much worse.
Track Name: The Way To Unwind
Sitting in an open field, a man sits and waits for the future that stays in his sights at all times – though he’s blind.

Oh to find the way to unwind.

A fool would panic and be off to the end,
but he sits and he listens. In time he will know which direction to head.
A maze for most
but through it he floats
as smooth as glass;
an old gazelle’s ghost.

Where is my only mind?
Tell me we’re not through.
Where is my only mind? Oh me. Oh my. Oh you.
Only one. Lonely view. My only mind was always true.
Track Name: Pearl Diver
She’s just a diver. See how she plunges the depths of the sea?
If she’s just a diver, how can she hold such royal things?

I just don’t know how to say it
Pearl diver, you’re a saint.
It’s on the table. I’ve read it.
Pearl diver, you’re a saint.

Where do you find them? Is it dark? If so, where do you find the light?
Can you take me with you? Is it too deep and will I die?

I just don’t know how to say it
Pearl diver, you’re a saint.
It’s on the table. I’ve read it.
Pearl diver, you’re a saint.

How do you trick me every time?
I can’t complain. After all, I’m the one who’s falling for you.
If our roles were reversed I’d simply be drowning while you’d still thrive.
Track Name: Bedroom Beach
I just awoke from a dream. By awakening I returned so it seems.
The place I went to was so serene that it since has reshaped me.
It’s getting harder to sleep all day just to get through the week.
I wish that I could join the two worlds that exist within me.

The sands of time with time are turned to glass.
He alone who shapes it shapes the past.
So let us close our eyes for a second pretend that we’re not here.
Picture yourself in passage - the space between far and near.

Now that I’ve been to the edge I can only see the world from my bed.
It’s as if I’m asleep but instead I’m just simply trapped in my head.
